About Small Ripples Theatre

Small Ripples Theatre was formed in 2023 by three Asian artists (and friends) of diverse artistic backgrounds.

Small Ripples aims to:

  1. Create original musicals about centering on Asian culture and stories

  2. Through these productions, provide opportunities for Asian artists and creatives, on-stage and off, to develop and showcase their talent

  3. Tell meaningful stories about the human experience that encourage a more empathetic and inclusive society

Small Ripples got its name from the saying, “small ripples create big waves” - 小涟漪掀起大风浪. We hope that our musicals leave a lasting positive impact.

Small Ripples first musical, The Best Cabinet Maker, inspired by real Chinese furniture makers in 1900s Melbourne. Cabinet Maker followed Chinese immigrant Ah Chan and his move to Melbourne from Guangdong in search of a better life as a cabinet maker. The musical references real events including the 1903 Chinese Cabinet Makers' Strike and the White Australia Policy. Ah Chan, and his wife Ah Moi, work to make a home in Australia while facing discrimination in a system built against them. The score was a mix of hip-hop, rap, Mando-pop and traditional Chinese music.

We are currently working on our second musical, Hidden Tunes 弦外之影, which revolves around the sexual harassment of a student at a music academy and the aftermath. The show focuses on the friendship between the survivor and a bystander, and highlights the importance of allyship and being a supportive friend.
